Snowboarding Snowmobiling Storm Watching

Winter Adventures & Activities
Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada

Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada is year round tourism destination with an incredible winter and summer adventure season. Snow and ocean storms in the winter. Sun and warmth in the summer. It is the best of both worlds.

On Vancouver Island the winter adventure season runs from late November to late March. The length of the winter adventure season depends allot on how long the snow sticks around in the mountains and how long the storms keep pounding the west coast.

There are three groups of winter activities (1) snow activities (2) storm activities (3) year round activities.

In the mountains, at the higher elevations, winter brings snow. It is a wet snow and sometimes allot of snow. Snow in the mountains means the beginning of snow activities like downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and skating.

After the snow has accumulated the mountain resorts and alpine clubs swing into ski, snowboard and cross country ski season. There are two mountain ski resorts on Vancouver island - Mount Washington and Mount Cain.

Mount Washington is the larger ski resort of the two and is located centrally on Vancouver Island nearest to the community of Courtenay, British Columbia, Canada. Mount Cain is a smaller ski resort and less developed. It is located near the community of Port McNeill.

The other popular winter activity is called storm watching. It is enjoyed on the west coast of Vancouver Island where the powerful winter storms crash the cliffs and pound the coastline.

Resorts and accommodations in the Pacific Rim villages of Tofino and Ucluelet provide a comfortable setting to watch the storms. Many of the same accommodations provide rain gear and rubber boats if you want to get closer to the storm while walking a sandy beach.

In many of tthe communities - during the winter months - it is rain not snow when there is precipitation. On sunshine days in the winter months people enjoy year round activities like golfing, scuba diving, fishing and surfing.
